De los doscientos millones de patrones de vestidos que tengo me empeñé en hacerme este:

Out of the gazillion dress patterns I own I went for this:

Burda 132-04-2011

Este vestido se me ha atascado hasta el punto de que lo sensato sería dejarlo en el cajón, pero como no soy sensata, sino terca como una mula, sigo en ello. ¿Qué pasa?

1) Pues que el patrón está hecho para hacerlo en piel, pero yo lo quiero hacer en tela y estoy haciéndole modificaciones al patrón para que por la sisa no se me vea el DNI. El proceso es un engorro porque, como soy relativamente nueva en esto del patronaje, lo hago montando el patrón de papel de seda con alfileres y probándomelo para ver cuáles son las modificaciones. Me he probado el medio vestido de papel de seda unas doscientas veces, me he clavado los alfileres otras doscientas, tengo tortícolis de intentar verme la espalda y todavía no he cortado la tela. ¡rayos y centellas!. 

2) Aún me queda por solucionar el tema de ¿cómo leches voy a pulir cantos? El modelo original del Burda se corta al ras, sin margen de costura ni vistas ni forro.. He acudido a mi enciclopedia de costura Irene Bullock, que si no lo sabe ella no lo sabe nadie, y gracias a su ayuda podría hacer algo, si es que llego a ese paso este verano.

No pinta nada bien, y menos cuando veo que no es un vestido con éxito. Ni siquiera he cortado la tela, pero ¿qué os apuesto que a pesar de todo la voy a cortar? Que alguien me haga entrar en razón por favor.

I´m stuck on this pattern for these reasons:

1) It´s designed for leather and I want to use woven, so I´ve had to modify the armscyce extensively. I´ve ended up drafting new pieces for the body sides too and I´m exhausted of trying out a tissue half pattern on and off for a week. I can´t feel pins piercing my skin anymore.

2) I still don´t know how to finish raw edges. Do I make it fully lined? Facings perhaps? Bias strips? I asked the great Irene Bullock for help, and thanks to that I should be able to figure something out, if I have the energy.

It doesn´t seem to be a very successful dress and I should let it go if I were a sensible lady, but I´m not. And I know I will cut out the fabric, mess it up and stop sewing for good. Anyone stop me here please!

Don adivina·donde·llevo·la·cartera posando mi último Burda, camisa 05 2011 129. Todo fué viento en popa, sin usar el odioso descosedor de costuras demasiado, con todas las piezas bien alineadas y sin retoques al patrón. Ni siquiera se me gastó el hilo de la canilla a media costura, como suele hacer siempre.

El patrón no era difícil, aunque me costó trabajar con tanta tela. Tuve que limpiar mi mesa para montar en plano las piezas, por lo que tuve que usar SU mesa también, pero no pudo protestarme esta vez.

Mr guess·in·which·pocket·I·carry·my·wallet (see last pic) modelling my last Burda project, Mens shirt 05 2011 129. It all went according to plan, no overuse of the dreaded seam ripper , everything lined up and no fitting alterations required. I didn´t even run out of bobbin thread. 

 I must say the pattern isn´t difficult, although I´m not used to working with so much fabric. I had to clear out my sewing desk to lay the pieces flat, which means I had to use HIS table too, but he couldn´t complain this time.

Si os interesan los detalles estas son las cosas buenas:

• Las mangas se unen al cuerpo antes de cerrar las costuras laterale, estilo kimono, por lo que me ahorré tener que embeber la copa, etc,...
• La tapeta de los botones es una extensión del medio delantero, aunque lo corté aparte para hacerlo de la otra tela
• Mangas cortas = no puños

Y las cosas ¿?
El canesú se une a la espalda y al delantero ANTES de coserle los bolsillos al delantero, lo que lo complica mucho porque hay mucha más tela con la que trabajar. La próxima vez coseré los bolsillos primero porque no le veo explicación lógica a este orden.

Y las cosas que no os voy a enseñar:

• Mi pespunte visto es penoso. No hay forma de que me salga recto y la culpa es de mi máquina, porque si de algo me sirvieron mis tropecientos años de dibujo a mano alzada en la Escuela de Arquitectura, es para hacer líneas paralelas sin temblar. Así que es ELLA, no yo.
• El dobladillo curvo del bajo está un poco "son las tres de la mañana y ya me da igual lo que salga". Contaba con que mi marido es un tío elegante y lleva las camisas por dentro, menos mal.

Y con esto y, cuando acabe los disfraces de fin de curso, el horizonte se queda libre para hacerme algo a mi, que ya me toca.

If you´re interested in details here are the good things:

• The sleeves are sewn in before the side seams so no nasty puckering sleeves to fit in.
• The collar button plackets is an enlargement of the front pieces, although I made it in two to add a contrast fabric.
•  I did short sleeves,so no cuffs to worry about.

And the ¿? things:
The yoke, back and front pieces are assembled before stitching the pockets to the front. Next time I´ll sew the pockets to the front pieces before joining them to the yoke and back, to avoid having to work with so much fabric.

And the things I will not show you:

• My topstitching is lousy. I cannot for the life of me get a straight line. I blame my machine because years of freehand drawing as an architect, made me capable of doing parallel lines easily, so it´s HER, not me.
• The shaped hem, curved at the sides. Messy job. But he´s a smart guy and tucks his shirts in so no worries.

And now the horizon is clear for me to start on something for my little self.

Más camisa :: Burda shirt progress

El fin de semana nos fuimos de excursión familiar a la tienda de telas, con una idea más o menos clara de que la tela de la camisa tenía que ser de color liso porque las rayas y los cuadros hay que casarlos y yo no me iba a complicar la vida en este primer patrón. Con tres niños menores de cinco años dueños de 30 dedos sucios, y un marido con cara de "qué hago yo aquí" metidos en una tienda con todas las telas caras en exposición, imaginaos lo poco que tardamos en elegir este azulito verdoso (aunque me bastaron 3 segundos para meter también en la bolsa un lino color coral de lujo)

I asked my husband to think about fabrics and details for his shirt, but on one condition: no stripes or plaids to match, and no nasty toxic material either. We then went down to my favourite and biggest fabric store in town. Now you get the picture, three kids under 4 and a out of place husband in a shop full of "please keep dirty chubby fingers off" signs... no easy if you ask me. But quick, because after only ten minutes we had left the store with 3 metres of this shirting cotton (and two metres of a beautiful coral linen for me)

Creo es un algodón poco tóxico porque después de lavar y planchar sigue arrugado, pero tiene un tacto suave y fresquito para el verano. Curiosamente el color es igual al del chico trompeta, pero mi marido decidió aderezarlo con el algodón de flores en el interior de las tapetas y el cuello. Es la misma tela japonesa que usé para esta blusa de mi hija.

El otro cambio fue hacerle mangas cortas, así que usé una camisa suya para modificar el patrón original. Aquí se ven las piezas del patrón del dibujo del Burda

Once we had ruled out stripes and checks and pinks and whites and blacks, all that was left was this light blue with a tinge of green cotton. It´s soft and drapes well, although after washing and pressing it at home I wasn´t sure it was a good buy because it´s prone to wrinkles and doesn´t get ironed easily. On the other hand it may give it a more casual look.

Our fabric choice is identical to the trumpet guy shirt, but he wants to add a bit of colour by using a contrasting fabric for the inside of the pocket flaps and the collar stand. I gave him some options and he picked a japanese cotton, which I love more for its quality than for the print. I have used it in this top for my daughter and it´s fantastic. The other change he requested was short sleeves, so I used his favourite shirt as a template for the sleeve pattern. Here is a scan of the pattern pieces drawing from Burda

Me llamó la atención que la espalda no tuviera pliegues, porque todas las camisas de mi marido los tienen, así que supuse que iba a ser un patrón holgado y saqué la talla más pequeña. La verdad es que hemos acertado y le queda nique. Tengo un perfecto ejemplar Burda talla 50 en casa.

Esta vez he sido extra cuidadosa calcando y cortando la tela, y por fin he encontrado el mejor método para añadir los márgenes de costura a los patrones de Burda. En lugar de dibujarlos en la tela, los dibujo en el patrón antes de recortar, así tengo siempre a la vista la línea de costura. Me ha funcionado de maravilla, y fue muy fácil porque descubrí que mi cinta métrica mide exactamente 1.5cms de ancho y la usé para trazar las líneas. Esta es la pieza del canesú para ilustrar mi ingenioso descubrimiento

When I looked at piece 23,the back,  I noticed it didn´t have any pleats, unlike 100% of my husbands shirts, so I assumed the fit was on the big side and chose the size accordingly. Pure guess but it fits great. He happens to be a perfect Burda size 50 chap.

I´ve been extra careful marking and cutting out the fabric and has paid off.  I finally found the best way to add seam allowances to Burda traced pattens. Rather than adding it to the fabric I drew it in the tissue, so I could see the stitching line when I needed it. I used the width of my flexible measure tape as a guide, because it´s 1.5cms wide, so great! This is my traced pattern piece 22, the yoke.

Estoy muy satisfecha con el resultado porque he conseguido bolsillos y cuellos idénticos y dobladillos bien alineados, y aunque hay cosillas que tienen que mejorar, en general tienen muy buena pinta. Cuando le cosa los botones os la enseño, con el marido dentro a ser posible.

The pieces came together perfectly, I got identical pockets, matching collar points and level hems. I´m thrilled about it. Of course there are things that could have been done better but I´m not too bothered this time. Nor is he.

Burda 05 2011 Mens shirt #129 :: Camisa de hombre

Mi marido muestra un interés extraño en mi costura. Me suele preguntar sobre lo que estoy cosiendo, me escucha cuando me quejo de los malos patrones e incluso me hace preguntas. Y lo entiende ¿?. Durante los últimos dos años me ha visto evolucionar desde aspirante a aprendiz de costurera sin saber coser ni un dobladillo, a convertirme en una costurerilla apañá que no le tiene miedo a ningún patrón.

El verano pasado me preguntó si yo sería capaz de hacerle una camisa. Le dije que no porque en ese momento no había cosido mangas ni cuellos ni nada con más de 3 piezas. Unos meses después me volvió a preguntar y le volví a dar calabazas, porque no confiaba en mis habilidades para conseguir un cuello de camisa perfecto. Hace poco Burda Style incluía esta camisa en su número de Mayo.

 My husband shows quite a weird interest in my sewing, which I find flattering but a bit suspicious too. He actually notices when I start a new project, listens to my complaints on lousy pattern instructions and seems to understand what I say.

Over the past two years he´s seen me grow from a shy beginner wannabe home sewist, to an intermediate risk taking wannabe sewing fanatic.  Last summer he asked me if I could sew a shirt for him. I had to say no, as I hadn´t constructed any garments with more than three pieces at the time. A few months later he asked me again and I said no again, because I didn´t trust my sewing skills to make perfect collar points just yet. A month ago Burda Style included this mens shirt pattern in the latest issue

Esta vez yo le pregunté a él si seguía queriendo que le hiciera un camisa. ¿Ya? Contestó. ¡Pero si hace solo unos días no tenías ni idea!. Me lo tomé como un cumplido.

En fin, que este es mi proyecto inmediato y hemos empezado con una excursión a la tienda de telas en pareja ¿no es eso extraño?

This time I asked my husband if he wanted me to sew THIS shirt for him. Hi smiled and said "already?" And something like "wow, you´re progressing really fast". I took that as a huge compliment. Anyway, that´s my current project and we´ve been fabric shopping together. Doesn´t that sound really weird?

Burda Falda 07/2010 Mod126 :: Burda skirt 07/2010 126

En mi armario hay muchas faldas oscuras pero por alguna extraña razón ninguna era negra ¿qué clase de fondo de armario es ese? una mujer elegante tiene que tener al menos DOS faldas negras! Pues manos a la obra con la primera. Es este patrón de Julio de 2010

Falda recta por la rodilla, con bolsillos laterales y dos pliegues detrás. Lleva dos pinzas delanteras y cremallera invisible lateral. La tela es una sarga perfecta para entretiempo. El corte me gusta porque se ajusta por delante, pero tiene algo de línea evasé por detrás, lo que la hace más original. Los bolsillos son tipo cartera, y tras una dura batalla en el lateral que lleva la cremallera, quedan bastante bien.

I have plenty of skirts but none of them is black. The Elegant Woman must have at least two, so here comes my first:
Short skirt with side pockets, side zip, two front darts and two back pleats that gives the skirt a slight A line shape. I made it with one of this synthetic stuff with a diagonal weave called sarga in spanish, similar to gabardine. Perfect for spring.

¿Problemas? Esta vez ninguno con el fitting, aparte de que no acabo de dar con mi talla y le tuve que meter bastante a la cintura. Problemas con las instrucciones para montar los bolsillos muchos. Burda me ha decepcionado esta vez y sólo a base de errores conseguí montarnos medio que. Tuve que descoserlos tantas veces que la tela se empezó a deformar y al montar la cremallera invisible se atascó todo el tinglado y ahora la cremallera sólo baja hasta la mitad. Me entra si me aprieto pero en cuanto ponga un gramo ya no me vale.

Problems? None with the fitting this time but I messed it up with the pockets. Not my fault, Burda let me down this time with the instructions and only through trial and error I won the battle. Inserting the invisible zipper with the pockets was another hard step, and this time the zipper suffered badly and decided she wouldn´t be coming down anymore. I can only unzip halfway, and that means I have to pull myself really tight to put the skirt on. One chocolate too many and the skirt will have to be packed away.

Cuando la terminé y planché cambié de opinión respecto a los pliegues traseros. En el patrón original se cosen hasta unos 10cms de la cinturilla, y luego van sueltos, pero eso no me gustaba para mis formas así que los he cosido hasta mucho más abajo, para que no acentúen aquello.

In the original pattern the back pleats are stitched down to 10cm from the waist, but that accentuates my figure in a way I´m not interested in at all, so I stitched them down until the end of my curves. I think it´s much more flattering this way, unless you have a flat business.

Y nada más. Tengo una falda fantástica que ya me la puesto varios días y que quizás repita para el verano. Por cierto, no comments sobre los botones a punto de reventar de mi blusa. La tengo desde antes de mi primer embarazo y una ya no vuelve a ser la misma...

And that´s all. I have a lovely skirt that I´ve worn a lot and it´s a candidate to be made once more. By the way, no comments about my about-to-burst shirt button placket please. It´s my favourie shirt bought before my 1st pregnancy, and I´m in denial about my new figure...

Pantalones Burda 07/2010 127 :: 07/2010 127 High waisted trousers

Burda 07/2010 Mod127 para tallas altas en versión españolita petite. ¿Queda alguien que recuerde esta entrada en la que me propuse hacerme estos pantalones a la Katherine Hepburn? Pues lo conseguí. Ha sido un gran reto porque:

a) viene para tallas altas y yo mido 1,56cm

b) es mi segundo par de pantalones y no tenía mucha idea de eso de los ajustes

c) tiene bolsillos

¿Pero que hace una costurera intrépida como yo? Se compra este libro, 4 metros de tela por si acaso, y se pasa 4 semanas probando y desprobándose el pantalón hasta que más o menos. Ni que decir tiene que después de la segunda prueba ya una ni se molesta en volver a ponerse el chándal para volver a quitárselo a los cinco minutos.

So, after four weeks basting, unpicking, trying them on again and back to sewing, here they are. My Burda 07/2010 127 trousers for tall girls. It´s another milestone for me because: 

a) I´m petite (shorter than Burda petites, in fact)

b) It´s my second pair of pants and didnt´t know much about fitting

c) It has pockets.

What does a Katherine Hepburn wanna be do? She gets this book, over 4 yards of fabric just in case, and plans for a few weeks on sewing wearing just her pyjama top.

Coserlo no me ha llevó mucho tiempo, pero las modificaciones al patrón sí. Primero me saqué una talla a ojo porque no conozco las medidas de tallas altas, luego hice una prueba con tela de ikea y me salió enorme. Practicamente retoqué todas las costuras:
1. Profundicé la curva trasera del tiro para acomodar mi respingonez
2. Le metí 1cm a todas las costuras laterales
3. Le metí un montón (incuantificable porque le perdí la cuenta) a la costura central delantera.
Lo sorprendente es que el tiro me quedaba bien y la cintura caía en su sitio desde el principio.

En general estoy contenta con el pantalón pero cuando lo estrené, mi seguidor misterioso me miró por demasiado tiempo y, tras meditar sus palabras dijo: "no, si están bien, pero es que, no sé, pareces una alemana bajita". Lo cierto y verdad es que el estilo de pantalón es para piernas largas y no me acaban de convencer. No he comentado nada del largo, pero aquí va una foto que lo dice todo:

The making didn´t take me long in fact, but the fitting was a real issue. I´m not familiar with tall sizes so I chose one at random, made a muslim and came up too big. I transfered this alterations to the tissue:
1. I have a low derriere so I deepened the back crotch curve
2. I took in 1cm at the side seams and inseams
3. I took in the centre front seam by quite a lot
Surprinsingly I didn´t have to change the crotch length, as the waist stayed in place. I´m happy with how it turned out, although it´s a difficult style for me to wear. It suits longer legs and I´m not entirely comfortable with them, but well, I learn. I didn´t say anyhing about the lenght but this was the state of things before hemming

Quién lleva los pantalones :: High waisted trousers

¿En qué estaría pensando Katharine Hepburn cuando le hicieron esta foto durante el rodaje de The Phildelphia Story? ¿En Cary Grant? ¿O en lo bien que le quedan los pantalones anchos de talle alto? Seguro que lo segundo, al fin y al cabo Cary era demasiado joven para sus gustos...
Entre blogs y posts sobre propósitos de nuevo año yo confieso, padre, que no tengo ninguno. Bueno sí, terminar el abrigo de mi hija de Nochebuena. Mi plan costurero inmediato para cuando termine el abriguito es hacerme el look Katharine Hepburn completo, con foto en chimenea y todo.

Is she thinking on Cary Grant? Or on how cool she looks on that gorgeous pair of high waisted trousers?I´d say the latter, after all Mr Grant might have been a bit young for her liking.

Among blogs and posts full of New Year resolutions I confess I´ve none. Except for finishing off my daughter´s Christmas coat, that is. But my immediate sewing plan is to join The Cupcake Goddess sew along and make myself this pair of beauties from Burda 07 2010 127.

Para el pantalón he elegido este modelo del Burda 07-2010 Mod 127. Creo que es un modelo que, si me sale bien,le puede sentar muy bien a mi fisonomía respingona. El problemilla es que viene en tallas altas, para alemanas de 1,76m, y yo soy una españolita de 1,56m, that signifies que me sobran 20 cms a repartir entre el bajo, el tiro y la cinturilla. Este pequeño detalle es por lo que no me cosí el pantalón antes, pero hace unas semanas Sunni en su blog organizó un sew along justamente con este patrón, y voy a aprovechar la sabiduría de otras costureras compulsivas a ver si es posible convertir una talla alta a talla petite sin demasiada distorsión.
Para la tela me gustaría un crepe de lana en un tono marrón, algo con cuerpo y una caída bonita pero que me pueda poner en entretiempo y no pique. A lo mejor me escapo esta semana de tiendas y me compro también la tela para la blusa, que creo usaré este patrón que ya he hecho y me quedó muy bien.

The challenge will be to grade a tall size down to a petite. I´m not even sure it can be done and I may end up having to draft a new pattern altogether but I accept the risk, so here I go...
For the top I think I´ll use this tried and tested Burda pattern, perhaps in a silky crepe or voile.

Falda Revista Patrones :: Skirt Patrones Magazine

¿Recordáis esta falda? Mi primera experiencia cosiendo con la revista Patrones, y probablemente la última. El resultado final es una falda demasiado corta para mi, y con unas hechuras a la que, me ponga como me ponga, siempre le salen pliegues imprevistos.

La desbocá (así la he bautizado) ha salido a la calle un par de veces y está aprobada con suficiente raspado. El que esté colgada en mi armario y no en mi caja de telas, se debe a que mi marido cuando me la vio puesta dijo "uy, que falda más chula! ¿te la has hecho tú?" Increíble que después de dos meses que la falda ha estado colgada de todos los pomos de todas las puertas que hay en esta casa, mi querido esposo no la haya visto antes. También confirma mis sospechas sobre quien es ese misterioso seguidor de mi blog llamado Alberto Gómez, el seguidor menos activo de la blogsfera...

Do you remember this skirt? It´s been my first project from Patrones, and I´m sorry to say it might be the last. The final result is a sagging piece of fabric too short for my liking. The sagging lady, as I´ll call it from now, has been out and about twice, and hasn´t passed the test. Although I won´t wear it to the office I keep it in my closet because my husband likes it. Amazingly he took notice of it and that has saved it from being repurposed.

La desbocá ya ha estado en Mercadona y en la carnicería, pero no es apta para la oficina, donde no quiero permitirme la extravagancia de llevar una falda por encima de la rodilla. Y estando ayer en la cola de la carnicería, y mientras me sacaba los hilvanes de las miles de costuras de dentro del bolsillo, reflexionaba yo sobre porqué esta falda no me ha quedado bien. Mi primera respuesta es que el patrón es muy malo. Cierto y confirmado por mi madre, que lo analizó y emitió veredicto afirmativo. También probado por esta compañera costurera y más experta que yo en la revista.

Mi segunda conclusión es que yo no había entendido todavía mis curvas. Mi cuerpo tiene una anatomía curiosa, con más volumen en mi respingonez y menos en caderas. No todos los cortes me quedan bien, algo que ya intuía cuando observé que en mi armario hay múltiples variaciones sobre un mismo tema. Pues bien, es justo ahora cuando he ENTENDIDO mis formas. En términos costureros significa que siempre tengo que hacer las mismas modificaciones a los patrones, alargar las pinzas traseras para llegar hasta mi respingonez, hacer una talla más de cadera que de cintura y acortar los dobladillos. ¿y porqué no he llegado antes a esta conclusión? Pues porque seguía metiendo tripa cada vez que me miraba en los escaparates, porque apretaba mi respingonez cuando me medía las caderas y porque confiaba en la ropa interior para poner las cosas en su sitio y adaptar mi cuerpo a las faldas, en lugar de las faldas a mi cuerpo.

Tras esta reflexión tan profunda fruto de la cola de chaquetones marrones que tuve que hacer ayer para comprar cuarto y mitad de pechuga de pollo cortada en filetes finitos... ¿por dónde iba?...os dejo una de las tonterías que hago mientras arranca mi ordenador

But wearing the sagging lady has made me aware of my body shape. So far I´ve been sewing in the same way as I shop for clothes. Sizes were there and I had to fit in the them. Patterns were there and I had to fit in them, with minor tweaks like hems. So, I´ve come to the conclusion that one of the benefits of sewing for me is that clothes must fit ME, not the other way around. The side effect of this realisation is that I have to accept my body as it is, understand my geometry and adapt patterns as required.

Pantalones Revista Burda :: Burda Pants

Último fichaje par mi fondo de armario: Pantalón Burda del que ya os hablé aquí
Es mi primer par de pantalones para MI. Y va en mayúsculas porque sólo me quedan bien a MÍ y nada más que a MI. Ni largos ni estrechos, como me suele pasar con los pantalones que me compro. Es un gustazo poder llevar algo que me está bien.
(Antes de seguir leyendo os aviso que las fotos que vienen son un poco de pena, tanto por la modelo de agencia barata como por el hecho de que los pantalones están sin planchar. Ayer salió un rayo de sol inesperado entre tanta nube negra y tuve que aprovechar)
La confección ha sido simple pero me ha llevado algún tiempo terminarlo por dos cosas:
Cosa 1. Mi trasero es respingón. Eso es un hecho objetivo que todos veían menos yo, pero que se me ha presentado como una realidad cual maceta que se te cae a la cabeza de repenete. La consecuencia costurera es que mis faldas deben tener la parte de atrás más ancha que la de delante. Algo así como pasa con las embarazadas. Cómo este era mi primer pantalón me las tuve que ingeniar para ajustarlo probándomelo cada dos por tres, y sacándole a las costuras a huevo, sin método científico ni nada.
Cosa 2. Cremallera invisible. Nunca la había puesto pero este modelo la necesitaba porque va en la costura de atrás, acentuando mi respingonez. Comprar la cremallera fue fácil, y encontrar instrucciones paso a paso también, pero la maldita patilla especial para mi máquina no. Así que después de mucha frustración la cosí con la de cremalleras normal. Y funciona, pero sólo si tienes paciencia y dedos finos. Con las instrucciones de The Cupcake Goddess en su tutorial, y mi libro favorito, fue coser y cantar.

This is my latest project for my I´m-about-to-return-to-work wardrobe. I´m very pleased with it because it fits ME and just ME. Unlike store buys this pair wraps around my curves and feels right.
A warning now: my apologies for the following photos. Not only the model is the worst and least professional model around but the pants needs ironing!. My excuse is that we´ve had 8 minutes of sunlight this week and that´s the best me and my inexpensive camera could make
The pattern is quite good and straight forward, just two things held me up:
Thing 1: The fitting. I have a peculiar forward latino back. Sort of like a pregnant belly but at the back. I´m not wide at the hips if you look at me at the front but on a side view I have a funny curvy figure. That means I´ve had to adjust the pattern several times until it fitted right. Lots of basting, unpicking and trying them on again. 
Thing 2: Concealed zippers. As this model doesn´t have a side seam the zipper is at the back, so an invisible zipper was mandatory. Never had put one in. Nor was I able to find a concealed zipper foot for my machine so after a brief period of despair I used my normal zipper foot and it worked fine. I followed The Cupcake Goddess tutorial and my helpful book.

No conseguí casar los cuadros porque me quedé sin tela pero en general estoy muy satisfecha del resultado. Me doy un 8 sobre 10. Después de Navidad los repetiré en un color tan arriesgado y original como el negro Se nota mucho que estoy preparando mi uniforme de vuelta a la oficina ¿no?

Y cambiando de tema, y ya que ayer inauguramos el mes de la Navidad...

¿Quién se anima a pedirse por Reyes una máquina de coser y unirse a mi club de costureras anónimas compulsivas? Si no tenéis ninguna mamá, abuela o vecina costurera cerca (bastante improbable si vivís en España) yo os puedo ayudar en los principios. Primer consejo: las máquinas de "unos conocidos grandes almacenes" están bien de precio pero hay poca variedad, mejor ir a casas especializadas.

Mis pantalones super anchos. Avance :: Progress on my super wide pants

Así va mi pantalón ancho glamuroso donde los haya. Me decidí por este modelo de Burda por varias razones: el corte me suele sentar bien y es talla "no larga". Va a ser mi primer pantalón para mi, así que le estoy poniendo mucho esmero. Ayer corté la tela y cometí un error de principiante (os recuerdo que yo ya soy nivel medio porque me he hecho tres pares de mangas). Hay que colocar todas las piezas del patrón sobre la tela ANTES de cortar, para ver de antemano si te va a hacer falta más tela. Pues no lo hice, y la primera en la frente. Además no corté primero la pata más grande, como hay que hacer, sino que corté la estrecha y luego la grande no me daba de ancho. Por supuesto que no tenía ni más tela ni intención de comprarla así que la pieza 21 (ver abajo el diagrama) va sin margenes de costuras. Ahí, a pelo!!  Por culpa de ese fallo ahora no puedo casar las rayas en las costuras, porque tuve que apretujar la pieza donde cupiera. Intentaré solucionarlo cuando lo hilvane.

That's progress on my super wide super flattering Burda pants. I chose this model because a) it's my style and b) it's a "not tall at all" size. It'll be my first pair of trousers so I'm taking my time. But, I made a huge mistake. Every sewing book I read advises to lay all your paper pieces over your fabric BEFORE cutting. Well, I didn't. And of course I also ignored the second rule of cutting the larger piece first. The result is that piece 21 (see diagram below) is cut without seam allowance. Big risk. What really bothers me it's that I wanted to match the plaids and now It'll be impossible. Silly me.

Veis en el diagrama como la costura de las perneras es atrás, como las medias de la Brigitte Bardot, y que la forma de la cadera la da la pinza lateral. Interesante. También veréis que lleva bolsillos que no veréis en mi versión, porque no tengo ni idea de como hacerlos, ni ganas. Me queda por cortar las vistas pero según me recomienda Mi Madre, mejor las corto cuando me pruebe el pantalón. Ella manda. Por cierto, que he usado su método para marcar las telas: los pililis. Los odio porque se lleva mucho tiempo y porque luego me paso 15 días quitando hilvanes pero reconozco que es conveniente para las rectificaciones, porque siempre tienes a la vista las lineas de costura.
Pero no solo de esto vive una costurera compulsiva como yo, la semana pasada termine tres cositas y tengo cortada una chaqueta para mi gordito. Una de ellas es un pantalón para mis niñas en el que usé por primera vez, el hilo de pespuntear vaqueros. Un desastre total. La foto lo dice todo. Si alguien sabe porque me pasa esto por favor que me lo diga

You can see in the technical drawing how the seam line is at the back of the pants, no at the side. The hip curve is obtained with darts. Interesting. You'll also see pockets that won't be in my version because my sewing life is already complicated enough without them. I still have to cut out the facings, but as mum suggests, I'll do it when the trousers are fitted. By the way, I used her method of transferring pattern lines to the fabric with tailor tacks. Tedious as hell but it'll be good to have the seam line marked.

But a compulsive seamstress like me can't thrive on just one project a week. I completed three small things last week and cut out a jacket for my little boy. One of the finished projects is an Oliver and S pair of pants in denim. I used for the first time a special denim topstitching thread. Disaster. See for yourself. Can anyone let me know why this happened? I fiddled with the tension, and the bobbin with no difference. Could it be the needle? Help please.

como coser mangas :: Promoted!

Ayer monté mi tercer par de mangas, sin arrugas y sin bolsas. Rehice la costura veinte veces pero me han quedado muy bien así que a partir de este momento me asciendo de nivel. De principiante a avanzado. Ea. Con un par de cuellos me haré experta.

Good news for me! I´ve been self promoted from novice to intermediate. I´ve completed my third set of sleeves and they look perfect. No pluckers and no catchings. It´s taken me three days but they´re done. Here´s a video that helped me "master" the technique. Click here.

Vuelo a Wanderlust :: Flight to Wanderlust

Mi primera blusa! Aunque es bastante mejorable estoy muy contenta con mi blusa mostaza. El color es fantástico y por fin tengo una blusa que me queda bien. Ni larga, ni corta, ni demasiado ajustada, ni me hace arrugas en sitios raros... El largo es ideal para llevarla por fuera o por dentro, y la media manga me viene muy bien para este tiempo. Es un poco entallada, lo justo para insinuar la cintura (o lo que antes de los embarazos era una cintura). Con el lazo tengo un poco de batalla porque no sé como atarlo sin que parezca un nudo, creo que cuando encuentre el punto justo lo coseré.
Y pasamos a las tecnicalidades. Es el modelo Burda del que ya os hable aquí. Le he hecho algunas modificaciones al patrón, algunas mejores y otras no tanto. Acorté el largo y me ha quedado "a mi gusto". Luego tuve un mal día e hice dos tonterías: Decidí hacerme una manga larga pero cuando corté la tela no tenía suficiente así que me quedé a medio camino. Luego, como tenía menos tela que antes, acorté el lazo, tanto en ancho como en largo, y por eso es tipo corbatilla asistente de vuelo Ryanair. Es diferente al modelo de la revista pero tiene un aire 50s que me gusta.

My very first mama top! Although it didn´t turn out as planned I´m so happy with it. The colour is fantastic and I have, finally, a top that really fits me. It´s just the right length, snug but not tight and I can wear it tucked inside my skirts or with jeans. It insinuates the line where I once had a waist so that is a bonus. I lost the battle with the neck tie but it´s my own fault. I made two alterations to the pattern that almost ruined the look of it. I lengthened the sleeves on the pattern but when I traced it onto the fabric I realised I didn't have enough fabric. So I compromised halfway. Then I found out I had even less fabric for the tie so I had to join two strips on the bias and make it shorter and thinner... well, it looks fine but I should have planned better, I know. When I first tried it on I looked like a petite version of a Ryanair flight attendant, but when I got two comments on BurdaStyle saying it had a retro style I was happy again!

Pero lo importante de esta blusa es que he cosido mi segundo par de mangas!!! Embebí la copa entre los puntos, repartí bien los frunces, la prendí con alfileres, la hilvané a mano, luego la hilvané con la máquina, y cuando ya no existía ninguna otra forma de sujetarla a la sisa la pespunteé con mano temblorosa. Y me salió regular. Muchas arruguitas. Lo volví a hacer y  salió un poco mejor. A la tercera me di por vencida y pensé que las arruguitas se irían al planchar. La planché con tanto vapor que me sirvió para una limpieza de poros, dándole bien a la costura hasta que la puse planita y adiós arrugas. Luego vi que la tela hacía una especie de bolsas en la costura de la sisa...ya no podía mas así que mandé un SOS:

"Yo: Cómo se montan estas dichosas mangas para que no me salgan tipo Blancanieves? Cual es el truco?

Mamá: Pues las embebes (hecho), las frunces (hecho), las planchas....ese es el truco, si las planchas antes de montarlas quedarán mejor. Y si la planchas después ten cuidado no estires la costura porque están al bies y darán de si y te saldrán bolsas y no quedará bien...

Yo: Vale, de los errores se aprende."

But the important thing about my blouse is that I have sewn my second pair of sleeves!! I encountered the usual problems which is fine because it means I know more than before. My big mistake was that I pressed the seam too much, and I distorted the fabric. I showed it to my Mum and although she approved of the result, she advised to press the fullness of the sleeve BEFORE sewing it to the body. That way you would avoid pluckers and nasty catchings, she wisely said.

 

Lo mejor:

• El color y lo bien que me queda 
• Ya me la he puesto tres veces, con vaqueros, faldas... es muy mi estilo. En la foto la llevo con esta falda.
• El largo tonto de manga. Perfecto para el invierno de Sevilla

Lo peor:

• La tela pica y es muy tiesa. Es horrible, basicamente. Tiene demasiada fibra sintética. 
• Las mangas hay que montarlas mejor

Y ya estoy maquinando otros dos proyectos.  Esta chaqueta para mis niñas en piqué celeste y este pantalón para mi. El sábado fui a comprarme la tela, una lana fría gris muy clásica y preciosa. Ya os contaré.

The best

• The colour and The fitting
• I have worn it non stop since I finished it. In the pic I wear it with this skirt
• In the end the sleeve length is just perfect

The worst

• The fabric has so much synthetic fibre contents that is stiff and feels itchy. It´s horrible basically.
• Pressing the sleeves forcing the fabric to stay flat. Gentle next time. Promise.

Now I´m cooking this jacket in baby blue for my little girl and these pants for me. Its a curious pattern from the last issue of Burda, because it has the side seams at the back, so they´re not really side seams... I´ll show you next time.

Blusa Burda Style en marcha :: Work in progress...

Modelo blusa con lazo de BurdaStyle 10/2010. En amarillo mostaza. He alargado la manga por eso del fresquillo que ya hace. Esta vez en la talla 38, aunque la cintura me quedaba por la cadera asi que le he tenido que quitar 4 cms de largo. (Las alemanas del burda son solo 4 cms mas altas que yo, veis? A Mallorca solo vienen las grandes, en realidad son pequeñitas pero se quedan en casa haciendo mermelada de cebolla).

Model Wanderlust from BurdaStyle 10/2010. In a mustard yellow fabric. I have lengthened the sleeves to use it in winter. I went for size 38 and looks fine, although the waist mark falls 4cms bellow my true waist. Does this mean german girls are just 4 cms taller than me? Don't think so... And thanks to Burdastyle member catchannette for sharing her shirt with us.

Por fin :: Finally

6 semanas después mi falda de verano ya está terminada. yupiiiiiii!!!! No me importa que se me pelen las rodillas de frío porque lo que cuenta es que lo he conseguido.
Me lié con las instrucciones, tuve que pedir ayuda, me quedé casi sin tela, la he cosido practicamente a mano pero ESTÁ TERMINADA Y COLGADA EN MI ARMARIO. Sin estrenar, claro, a ver con que medias me pongo una falda azul marino. Color carne, oigo por ahi. mmmm? Si es mi carne entonces son medias blancas.

Six weeks later and my summer skirt is finally finished!. I don't care it's the end of October because I am going to wear it.
I messed it up with the instructions, had to ask for help, run out of fabric, had to hand sew almost every seam, but IT'S FINISHED AND HANGS BEAUTIFULLY IN MY CLOSET. Haven't worn it yet, just waiting to find the right shoes for a navy short skirt.



Lo mejor:

• Dobladillos y cremallera están hechos a mano. Ya me salen las puntadas muy bien, tanto que me he atrevido a fotografiarlas.
• Me la he ajustado al cuerpo estupendamente. No me hace ni una bolsa rara, y cuando me siento no reviento las costuras :-)
• He pespunteado el canesú interior al margen de la costura y así queda plano y se plancha mejor.
• He cosido un corchete. Nada destacable pero es mi primer corchete.

The best:

• Hems and zip are sewn by hand. It came out so neat I could even take pictures to show it off.
• Great fitting!
  
• I understitched the inside yoke and it really makes a difference
• I stitched a hook and eye thingy. Not a big deal but it was the first time.
  

Lo mejorable:

• La talla 42 de Burda es enorme para mi. A ver si me entero. No solo de ancho sino de alto, que luego las cinturillas me llegan a las axilas.
• No tengo 15 años para llevar faldas tan cortas.
• Juro por Dios que jamas volveré a desviarme de las instrucciones de Burda

Y aquí os dejo fotos de mi yo misma posando cual Naomi Campbell en negativo. Son fotos horrorosas pero es para que me creáis y veáis que esta vez no hay trampa en la espalda :-)

What could have been better:

• Burda size 42 is huge for me. German girls are way taller than me. Poor girls.
• I'm not 15 anymore. Short skirts should never be back in my wardrobe.
• I will never again ignore burda instructions in my life. NEVER.
  

And here you have me posing like Naomi Campbell on a really bad day. Terrible photos just to prove that the fitting is right, and that this time I don't need anything else :-)

Hoy me he encontrado con una pequeña sorpresa: Este vestido ha estado en la portada de burdatyle entre los featured projects!!! (por poco tiempo pero suficiente para darle un achuchón a mi autoestima costurera:-)) Son listos los de burda, parece que sabían que hoy iba a escribir sobre sus dos últimas revistas. Ahora estoy totalmente condicionada porque me han embriagado de éxito. Pero una profesional nunca debe olvidar sus responsabilidades así que allá vamos:

I've had a nice surprise this morning. My O+S birthday party dress has been featured in Burdastyle. I'm over the moon as it means a huge boost to my sewing ego. Thanks, thanks and a million thanks!!!. So now I'm in a difficult situation, as I had planned to write about the latest burda easy issue. But a world reknown sewist must be loyal to her beliefs so here I go.

Burda easy extra moda joven.
Por 5,20€ vienen 6 modelos con sus variaciones, en total 15 modelos. Dónde están los patrones que faltan hasta llegar a los 28 modelos que promete la portada? Hay que descargárselos de la web. Esto es burda JOVEN, mola lo de hacer las cosas por Internet. Quizás lo siguiente sea bajárselos desde el móvil o subirlos al ipad. A pesar de los pocos patrones que suele traer burda easy, me gusta porque tiene los básicos para el fondo de armario: camisetas, faldas rectas o chaquetas facilonas. El estilismo es un poco...mmmm...joven, pero si entrecierro los ojos y hago un esfuerzo grande grandísimo, puedo verme con alguno de estos conjuntitos:

There 6 models with different views each, 15 models in total. The cover says you'll get 28, so where are the others? You have to download them from the web. This is burda easy my friend, aimed at the young and fashionable who would rather print out than using the traditional method of tracing a pattern. Anyway, despite its few patterns there are some nice basics for this season. The stylism is a bit....mmm....young for my like but if I squint my eyes I can picture myself in some toned down versions of this cool outfits:


Conjuntito "La Solista". La falda al bies me encanta. Y la rebeca de punto con agujas del 15 me vendría de perlas para estilizar la silueta mesa camilla. Aun así creo que me voy a arriesgar a probar.
Cool outfit "The student with a german newspaper". I love the colours and the skirt cut on the bias is gorgeous. If I had long legs I would sew myself one exact copy of it but I'm not sure if I should give it a try.
Conjuntito "Sed de Libertad. Look de Activista" Monísima chaqueta de fleece de neopreno estilo chanel. Si alguien sabe dónde conseguir esa tela de submarista que me lo diga please.

Cool outfil "I am two already!" So she got for second birthday a neoprene chanelle style jacket. Cute interpretation of a classic.

Conjuntito "Chicas en pie de Guerra. Estilo Madonna". Para la que no encuentre el neopreno en su mercería habitual, siempre se puede hacer esta coqueta chaqueta peluche, acostarse con las trenzas hechas, darse un buen cepillado con un cepillo malo y a bailar!!

• Lo mejor: Patrones multitallas, todos desde la 34 a la 44. Básicos en muchos estilos. El estilismo. Hojas de patrones independientes para cada modelo.

• Lo peor: Comparado con otros burda, la relación precio/número de patrones

• Extra: Instrucciones para una rebeca de punto oversize.

Cool outfit "Madonna" What else? If you can't find the fleece neoprene fabric for the jacket above, you can sew yourself this fluffy one instead. Just remember to sleep with your braids done, and brush your hair really well until it's stactic enough to empty the paper bin when you walk nearby. Then put on your worst T-shirt and go dancing!!

• The best: multisize patterns, from size 34 to 44. Basics models in different styles. Stylism of the models. Independent pattern sheets, so no need for tracing.
• The worst: Comparing to others burda issues it's a bit pricey for the number of patterns you get.
• Extra: An easy oversize knit jacket.
